Dicke Stein (Cloppenburg, Germany)

Places - Germany - Cloppenburg

The ‘Thick Stone’ was rolled here in the Ice Age (more than 20.000 years ago). When the ice melted, the stone stayed here in sand and gravel. It is made of Norwegian granite and weighs around 125 tons. The stone was buried completely in the ground. After the First World War it was lifted with great effort by the residents of the Ambührn and Schmertheim and is now a memorial symbol for the fallen during World War I.
